    The University of Michigan Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering was established as a NIOSH Education and Research Center (ERC) in 1981 . For the five year period covered in this report (1995-2000), we have provided professional (Masters) and research (Doctoral and post-Doctoral) training in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health Nursing, Occupational Medicine, Occupational Safety Engineering and Ergonomics, and Hazard Substances Academic Training (which complements the program in Industrial Hygiene). A Pilot Project Research Training Program was added in 1999. Our faculty, students and trainees have published hundreds of articles in peer reviewed scholarly journals, many book chapters, and numerous conference proceedings. In addition, our Continuing Education and Outreach programs are large, highly-regarded activities that serve all of the academic programs. All of our programs are based at The University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus, facilitating interdisciplinary activities for faculty and students. The Director of the Michigan ERC is Alfred Franzblau, MD. He is a faculty member in Environmental Health Sciences and is also the Program Director for Occupational Medicine. During the five-year period covered by this report, the Director of the ERC was W. Monroe Keyserling, Ph.D. Current directors of the other academic programs are: Edward Zellers, Ph.D. (Industrial Hygiene), Sally Lusk, Ph.D. (Occupational Health Nursing), Monroe Keyserling, Ph.D. (Occupational Safety Engineering and Ergonomics), and Stuart Battennan, Ph.D. (Hazardous Substances Academic Training). Monroe Keyserling, Ph.D. serves as the Associate Center Director and as the Director of the Pilot Project Research Training Program. Randall Rabourn, M.S.E. serves as the Director of Continuing Education and Outreach. The University of Michigan provides fully-equipped training facilities for all ERC activities, including classrooms; laboratories, clinical facilities; libraries; computing facilities; and faculty, staff, and student offices. The University of Michigan also provides substantial General Fund support for the salaries of all tenure track faculty. During our most recent site visit in December 1999, The University of Michigan was approved for an additional five years as a NIOSH Education and Research Center for the period July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2005.
