  The mission of the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health is to promote health, safety, and well being in the workplace and the community. The goal of the Center is to respond to the critical need for well-trained occupational and environmental health specialists by providing graduate-level academic training and continuing education with an underlying foundation of a state-of-the-art occupational and environmental health research program. This report summarizes progress and accomplishments for the 1995-2000 grant period. The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) at the University of Texas - Houston, School of Public Health, is the NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center (ERC) for Texas and federal Region VI. The SWCOEH is administratively housed in the University of Texas-Houston School of Public Health. The Center provides academic training in the core areas of industrial hygiene (MPH, MS, DrPH and PhD), occupational health for nurses (MPH, MPH/MSN), occupational medicine (MPH, residency in occupational medicine, and post-residency research training), occupational safety engineering (MS), as well as in the special emphasis area of occupational epidemiology (PhD). Interdisciplinary courses and activities are offered to ensure interaction between faculty and students in the core disciplines. In addition to the academic training program, research is conducted in each of the core and special emphasis areas listed above. The Continuing Education and Outreach program of the Center offers courses annually in Region VI to practicing occupational health professionals, professionals in related disciplines, paraprofessionals and technicians. These course offerings have provided opportunities for continuing education in a variety of aspects of occupational and environmental health. A hazardous substance training program, under the auspices of the Continuing Education Program, offers training to health and safety professionals in minority colleges and universities. Outreach activities are provided at the local, regional and international levels, through consultation, presentations, community service and offering of scholarships and pilot project research awards.
