Description:Under the Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Act of 1988, the operators of documented fishing vessels must have a trained Drill Instructor conduct monthly emergency and safety drills. Marine Safety Instructor trainer classes were held in Sitka and Seward, Alaska, and in Norfolk, Virginia. The training course was designed to train individuals to be Marine Safety Instructor Trainers. The Instructor Trainers then provided Drill Instructor training for their own home ports. Major process accomplishments were an increased capacity and numbers of people trained as Marine Safety instructor trainers and a great increase in the number of fishermen trained as Drill Instructors. Almost half the commercial fleet in Alaska has been trained through this network. The training was brought to 52 fishing ports around Alaska as well as to ports in Washington, Oregon, California, Texas, Virginia, New Jersey and other states. A total of 105 Marine Safety Instructor Trainers trained over 2,122 fishermen to be Drill instructors in over 200 classes. Training was specific to the use of emergency equipment such as immersion suits, life rafts, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons, and other lifesaving equipment and procedures.
