  The training objectives, activities and accomplishments of the Occupational Health Nursing Program at the University of Pennsylvania were presented in a final performance report. The purpose of the NIOSH grant was to maintain an existing program in Occupational Health Nursing and to develop and implement a research program for faculty and students. The report covered the grant period from July, 1991 through June 1994. During this time, eight Occupational Health Nurses were graduated from the Primary Care Option and one was graduated from the Administration/Consultation Option. A list of these graduates was provided. Improvements in the Occupational Health Program curriculum were described. The Issues in Occupational Health course was moved from the last semester to the first to provide students with an overview of the program. The required courses Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Toxicology, and Industrial Safety, were taken with industrial hygiene students at the School of Engineering at Temple University. Two to three clinical practicums and concurrent workshops were provided to enrich the industrial experience. Advanced Practicum in Occupational Health, the final clinical course, included the medical aspects of occupational health. The primary care and nursing administration program as well as the undergraduate and an additional graduate program have added occupational health content. Changes in faculty were explained, and roles of the current program faculty were provided. A major aspect of the program was recruitment, with two Graduate Education days held each year yielding between 20% and 25% of the enrollment. A sample advertisement for the program was included. The limited tuition package offered to students was seen as a major inhibitor to enrollment. Interdisciplinary collaboration has increased as demonstrated by shared courses with Temple University and links with area institutions and occupational physicians. [Description provided by NIOSH]
