Description:The evaluation of data relevant to the issue of silica (14808607) exposure around the Quail Hallow Quarry site was reported. A review of the literature on the health effects of silica exposure was presented. An evaluation of the adequacy of the monitoring data around this particular site was performed. Measurements taken at the site indicated that the levels of exposure were 1,000 times lower that the workplace exposure standard of 0.1 grams/cubic meter upheld by OSHA. A quantitative health risk assessment based on positive animal studies of crystalline silica was performed. It was indicated that the risk assessment used in this report included certain assumptions, but there was no accounting for the operation of other neighboring quarries, and there were no control air samples collected due to too few sampling sites in the present study. An overall scientific and policy assessment of the situation was provided. The need for determining a regulatory policy based on human data was stressed due to the much greater risk among silicotics compared to nonexposed workers. The author recommends that wet or moist operating practices be implemented on the quarry site in an effort to lower or control silica emissions, and suggests that additional sampling of silica levels be conducted during dry and wet operations.
