Description:A new tool handle design was tested to determine whether there was a significant reduction of stress on the musculoskeletal system of the user when applied on tools such as rakes, shovels, hoes, and mops. Laboratory and field tests were conducted on 45 subjects. Subjects were asked to push and pull on handles attached to a Kin-Com machine which measured the force they needed and electromyogram data for the arms and back. Subjects also used the handles in their normal work environment. Different tools demonstrated various types of improvements when the test handles were applied. The test handles seemed to be of more use when applied in a pushing than in a pulling mode. Use of the handles increased the ability of the user to twist or rotate the tool along the axis of the pole part of the handle. All subjects noted an improvement in twisting which reduced fatigue and made it much easier to work with the dust mop. The handles made work easier for the user when they were able to be adjusted in relation to the distance between the front and rear loop and to have an angle of the loop which was adjustable relative to the ground. These adjustments allowed the user to remain in a more neutral position and allowed the user to change the way his body weight was applied to the tool. [Description provided by NIOSH]
