  • Description:
This report described the educational programs available through the Educational Resource Center at the University of North Carolina. The curriculum in public nursing has added 57 Master's prepared occupational health nurses to the workforce. The program itself has grown in the past 5 years from three enrolled students in 1985 to 21 in 1990. Five occupational health nursing courses have been developed since 1985, two theory and three practicum courses. The culmination of the practicum was a workshop where the students present their products to faculty, other students and preceptors. Many articles and reports have been prepared by graduates of the program. The outreach, service, and continuing education aspects of the program were also highlighted, including the development of a comprehensive practicum experience; the development and implementation of interdisciplinary approaches to occupational health courses; increased research emphasis which has resulted in increased research opportunities for students through faculty sponsored research; increased involvement of occupational health nurses who serve as preceptors for students; and the establishment of the occupational health nurse advisory group to provide input to the program in terms of expansion and curricular modeling.
