Description:The possibility that vibration exposure may potentiate the effects of exposure to noise, increasing the risk of damage to the ear and resultant hearing loss was investigated. Chinchillas were exposed to a 30 hertz (Hz), 3g root mean square (RMS) and a 20Hz, 1.3g RMS cage vibration combined with a continuous noise of 95 decibels (dB), 125dB peak sound pressure level exposure paradigms. The exposure periods lasted for 5 days. The impact noise exposure was intended to have an approximately equal total energy. Measurements were made of temporary and permanent threshold shifts using evoked potentials. These exposures did change some of the dependent measures of hearing employed. The effect was only significant in the case of the stronger vibration exposure conditions and was particularly evident in the outer hair cell losses. In additional experiments, hearing loss, sensory cell loss and tuning characteristics were investigated in chinchillas after acoustic overstimulation. Animals were exposed to noise levels which ranged from low levels of continuous noise to very high peak intensities of impulse noise. Exposures included impulse noise, impact noise, continuous broad band noise, octave band noise, or combinations of these. Auditory thresholds and masked thresholds at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0, and 11.2kHz before and after exposure. Results indicated that there is a systematic change in variables defining the quality of tuning with increasing hearing loss; these changes were related to outer hair cell losses.
