Description:Various factors which may weaken the grip strength of individuals were considered; specific attention was devoted to the effect of wrist orientation on grip strength and endurance. During the study wrist orientation was changed by 15 degree increments in the following directions: plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, ulnar deviation and radial deviation. The subjects of the study, 20 men and 20 women, were to use maximum static force in gripping a dynamometer and to maintain maximum contraction until such time as the force of their grip dropped to 70 percent of its peak. Fatigue time, or endurance, was measured as a function of the time it took for this drop to occur. For all subjects and at all wrist positions, measurements were taken of relative changes in peak force, fatigue time, and linear impulse. A comparison of the data was made between the sexes. According to the authors, such studies will aid those who are involved in training workers in the proper use of hand held tools as well as those responsible for the designing of such tools to get the maximum effective use from their employment.
