  The Utah SCANS Project, which became the Utah Occupational Health and Safety Surveillance System, collected data concerning occupation and mortality of workers in the state, analyzed results of data collection, prepared reports, and disseminated them. Data were obtained through the Occupational Health Surveillance Mortality File from 1959 to 1981, the Occupational Health Surveillance Natality File, from 1978 to 1980, and the Utah Industrial Commission Morbidity File from 1980 to 1981. Proportional mortality ratios were computed for both occupation and industry for 1959 to 1967, 1968 to 1978, and 1978 to 1981. Six technical reports of these analyses were included in the appendix. The limitations of the SCANS Project, along with its strengths were discussed, including recommendations for other SCANS Projects in the future. For states just beginning a SCANS Project, the authors recommend that a specific plan for the development of the surveillance system is critical and should allow adequate time for the system to be developed. Recommendations include upgrading the quality of all vital certificates, training coders before starting the project, consider use of an automated dictionary for coding occupations and industries, and development of a surveillance system for reporting diseases which appear to be occupationally related. The use of occupationally related sentinel health events is advisable. [Description provided by NIOSH]
