Description:The purpose of this grant was to fund a program which would emphasize staff development, curriculum development, and the purchase of needed instructional equipment to create an Industrial Hygiene Program at the Western Wisconsin Technical Institute. In the fall of 1978, 12 students enrolled in the program; 74 enrolled in the fall of 1981. Course requirements include studies in technical mathematics, general chemistry, technical physics, industrial hygiene, technical drawing, industrial organic chemistry, environmental sampling techniques, fundamentals of electricity and electronics, environmental toxicology, hazardous materials, industrial hygiene control and measurement, instrumentation, industrial safety, internship, communication skills, social sciences, psychology of human relations, industrial psychology, and technical report writing. Students who graduated from this program were expected to be able to determine the extent of environmental problems and assist in the formulation of probable solutions, to perform analytical tests needed to provide data for adequate control of processing wastes and by products, to keep abreast of the latest technical and legal developments in the environmental control field, to collect samples for lab testing, to prepare reports, and to perform calibrations and minor maintenance procedures on monitoring equipment.
