• Description:
  The Occupational Safety Engineering (OSE) program at the University of Michigan was described. The OSE program is a graduate program leading to the Master of Science degree in engineering. No comparable program existed for the undergraduate student. Course work included studies in ergonomics, human factors engineering, and design type courses. Course work also stressed instrumentation, experimental design, collecting and analyzing data, traditional safety management and safety engineering topics, and legal, political and economic aspects of the workplace. Graduates at the graduate level were equipped to take the certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist exams. In the field, experience was gained by the students in the following areas: rubber manufacturing industry, steel industry, automotive industry, and pharmaceutical industry.
