Description:Projects underway involving the surface chemistry of natural minerals, mineral separation methods, means of extracting metals from minerals, and techniques for reducing atmospheric and water pollution which result from mineral processing operations were described. Individual papers included research on the following topics: dissolution and cation exchange properties of some asbestos (1332214) materials (to determine the extent to which the asbestos materials chrysotile (12001295), amosite (12172735), and crocidolite (12001284) are soluble in aqueous solutions of some selected salts and acids and to determine the cation exchange capacity of the minerals); some surface properties of asbestos minerals; variation of point of zero charge of oxide minerals as a function of aging time in water; a comparison of measured and calculated point of zero charge values for chrysotile, serpentine, and crocidolite; carcinogenesis of asbestos fibers as related to surface chemistry; amphoteric surfactants as flotation collectors; dissolution studies of amosite and crocidolite in aqueous solution in the absence of atmospheric carbon-dioxide, with attention given to determining the mechanisms involved based on the principles of chemical kinetics; characteristics of the activity of submicroscopic surface regions of chrysotile; and energy levels and magnetic moment of iron(2+) at octahedral sites with axial distortions.
