  Progress made under a training grant in the field of systems safety engineering was reviewed. From 1975 to 1978, this training program at North Carolina State University has involved the training of persons at the master's degree level for careers as safety specialists working in industry or with state and federal governmental agencies as pertains to the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. In addition to specific core courses in this curriculum, students were able to select from the following areas of interest: noise and vibration effects on workers, control of industrial noise, environmental toxicology, practices in industrial hygiene, and epidemiological investigations. The facilities and resources available to the students were described. Of the 29 students enrolled in the ergonomics graduate program in 1976/1977, nine were supported as NIOSH trainees. Several off campus support activities were offered including involvement with state departments of labor, health, and transportation; consultant support through NIOSH workshops at various locations; short courses offered on environmental safety; participation in symposiums; contributions to various journals of interest; and participation in NIOSH sponsored health studies.
