Possible noise reductions for manufacturing and machinery sectors of the textile industry were investigated in an attempt to bring this industry into compliance with the noise standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Specific aims included the publication of a manual of noise control for the textile industry as well as efforts to control noise from machinery and equipment including the fly shuttle loom, shuttleless looms, belt driver twisters and texturizers, spindles, and frames. Shuttle noise control by pneumatic shuttle checking was found to be economically infeasible. Models have been developed for quick return mechanisms, a series of four bar mechanisms, a V-shaped leaf spring, and a range of torsion springs. Detailed studies were conducted to identify the sources of noise in a DSL rapier loom. Similar efforts were expended to investigate noise and vibration characteristics of a highly tensioned moving belt in tangential contact with idler rolls and spindles. At a textile yarn manufacturing facility measurements were taken of the noise characteristics of a machine room containing tangential belt drive twisters. Two distinct series of heavy spindle isolators were developed from this research. A rank ordering of commercially available spindles according to noise output was undertaken along with a finite element analysis of spindle vibration. Field trials were conducted on five different machine systems of a spinning frame: spindles, rings, vacuum end collection, idlers, and drive tapes. [Description provided by NIOSH]
