Description:Work on nine different research projects on immune injury in occupational respiratory disease falling under this grant was reviewed. Topics included the pulmonary activities of Thermoactinomyces-vulgaris and Micropolyspora-faeni, comparison of endotoxin/like properties of T-vulgaris and M-faeni with known enterobacterial lipopolysaccharides, evaluation of inflammatory changes induced in the lung by inhalation of M-faeni spores, cotton dust, cotton bract dust, Escherichia-coli, and purified endotoxin aerosols, evaluation of the effects of inflammatory changes on respiratory immunization with soluble or particulate antigens, investigating the role of APC activation by inflammatory agents, the local and systemic cell mediated immunocompetence of lymphoid cells from unimmunized experimental animals, preparing both a soluble and a particulate form of a protein antigen for aerosol immunization, development of appropriate immunization protocols to deliver soluble and particulate antigen in equal amounts to the lower respiratory tract, and a comparison of the effect of local respiratory immunization with a soluble and particulate form of protein antigen on the induction of local and systemic cell mediated immunity.
