Aflatoxin in corn: occurrence, formation, and analysis.

  The occurrence, formation, and analysis of aflatoxin (1402682) in corn were studied. In the mid 1960s some of the first studies of the natural occurrence of aflatoxin in corn were undertaken. Analysis corn showed measurable levels of aflatoxin in only 4/230 ears, ranging from 3 to 5 parts per billion (ppb). Higher levels were detected in corn grown in the South with aflatoxin being detected in 35 percent of the samples taken and ranging up to 20ppb. Iowa corn harvested in 1975 was tested for aflatoxin with above 1 percent of the tested samples showing levels of 20ppb toxin. Following drought in 1977, 77 percent of the corn samples from the Southeast contained aflatoxin at levels over 100ppb. Hazards to agricultural workers arising from dust inhalation were cited. Aflatoxin has also been detected in corn from other countries. Highly significant correlations were noted between insect damage and the percentage of ears with visible Aspergillus-flavus, and between insect damage and aflatoxin contamination. Resistance studies indicated that inbred linked characters were related to the susceptibility of kernels to preharvest aflatoxin accumulation. Aflatoxin not only forms in preharvest corn, but also in corn during periods of storage. The proper method of sampling corn for aflatoxin analysis was described. Steps were provided for rapid presumptive testing, rapid screening procedures, and lengthy quantitative methods to measure precise amounts of toxin in corn. [Description provided by NIOSH]
