Description:Use of finite element numerical analysis method as a diagnostic and design tool for textile spindle noise control is described. Characteristics of the textile spindle and the sources of spindle noise are discussed. Advantages of using a finite element model to assist in interpreting experimental data and for noise reduction redesign efforts are reviewed. A model capable of identifying and confirming nodes of vibration from spindle system operation is described, consisting basically of three coupled beams representing the bolster, the spindle, and the bobbin with provisions for varying the degree of coupling. Test results on the effects of mounting techniques on isolated high frequency vibrations from the rail and on the vibration nodes of the bolster are reported. The authors conclude that most of the higher frequency noise from spindle systems is due to resonances of the various parts of the system. The finite element method is useful for assessing the effects of changes in one part of the system on the response of other parts. [Description provided by NIOSH]
