Description:Bone scans and x-rays from 21 workers with possible or suspected necrosis of the bone due to compressed air exposure while working in a tunneling operation 140 feet below the city of Milwaukee were examined. Seven of the 21 workers had evidence of dysbaric osteoradionecrosis of the long bones. The author concludes that the x-rays were superior to bone scans for evaluations of dysbaric osteonecrosis, because the scans are nonspecified and might yield false positive results for aseptic necrosis. The author recommends revision of OSHA decompression schedules since they possibly cause aseptic necrosis when used in the upper pressure ranges. [Description provided by NIOSH]
