Description:The purpose of this project was to assess respirator use practices among HCWs (including the potential benefits of using non FFRs) to evaluate current use practices in health care settings and inform future national stockpile considerations and standards development. This project demonstrated the need to carefully examine what is the best approach to respirator usage from a practice, cost, and care perspective. Policy makers need to decide with worker input what the best respirator choice is, taking into consideration the best approaches to training, monitoring, and limitations on exposure. For example, even after a diligent recruitment strategy, only one of the nine healthcare organizations included in this report used elastomerics for HCWs. This finding has important implications for the distribution and use of elastomerics during a pandemic as an alternative to N-95s, since extensive training of HCWs would be required prior to use. Purchasing respirators that workers do not like or will not use is not useful. Better guidance and a competency-based approach should be encouraged. Patient care and good outcomes must also be considered in the mix for effective decision making that will benefit all and should be an important area for research. [Description provided by NIOSH]
