Description:In October, 2011, a respiratory protection project (Respiratory Protection Program Evaluation in North Carolina Acute Care Facilities) was completed in 21 North Carolina acute care hospital facilities involving more than 400 healthcare workers to evaluate the use of respiratory protection for respiratory infection exposure among healthcare workers. The project involved an assessment of the written RPPs including each facility's written policies and procedures for respiratory protection; the proper use and adherence to OSHA's respiratory protection standards; the use of respiratory protection among healthcare workers (HCWs) including an observational component in a sample of participants; and HCWs' knowledge and beliefs regarding respiratory protection among HCWs and hospital management. Data obtained noted many positive findings; however, there were several deficiencies noted in practice and policy, and response differences between HCWs, unit managers, and hospital managers as previously reported.
