  Millions of workers who work in mines, shipyards, railroads, and construction sites are frequently exposed to diesel particulate matter. Epidemiological studies confirm the adverse health effects of inhaling ambient fine particles and a significant statistical relationship has been found between lung cancer and exposure to diesel exhaust. In a 2002 review, EPA summarized most of the important studies on health effects of diesel exhaust and concluded that exposure to diesel exhaust may cause lung cancer and "the particulate phase [as opposed to toxic gases] appears to have the greatest contribution to the carcinogenic effect". Diesel particles consist of elemental carbon core coated by organic compounds and nitrates and sulfates; some of these adsorbed organic compounds are known carcinogens like PAH's. Typical diesel particulate matter (DPM) size distributions show that virtually all of the particles are less than 10 micrometers and the majority of them are less than 1 micrometer. In addition to the health-related studies, climate scientists are increasingly concerned about the impact that particulate high in black carbon has on climate forcing and on altering the albedo of polar ice.
