Description:Agriculture is an industry and an occupation framed within the context of family and community. Although American farms and ranches are increasing in size and in the number of commercial operations, the family farm unit remains the dominant entity in agricultural production (USDA, 2002). The intricate relationship between home and work means that all family members are exposed to occupational hazards of farming. The philosophy of nursing supports the principle that individuals should be considered in the context of their environment, as individuals and family members within communities (American Nurses Association, 1999). When planning care, nurses must consider the exposure of individuals who live, work, and play in agricultural settings. A report to the nation in 1989 noted that 8,000 nurses with training in agriculture were needed to meet the needs of this cohort. [Description provided by NIOSH]
