Mortality of workers exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls - an update.

  A mortality study of workers exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) was conducted. This was an update of an earlier study which was considered inconclusive due to the small number of deaths and short observation period. The cohort consisted of 2,588 workers employed at two facilities manufacturing electrical capacitors (SIC- 3675). The vital status of the cohort as of December 31, 1982 was determined. Death certificates were obtained for all known deceased workers. Standardized mortality ratios were computed. Mortality from all causes and from all cancers was 295 and 62 deaths, versus 318 and 80 deaths expected, respectively. A statistically significant excess mortality for cancer of the liver and biliary passages was detected, 5 observed versus 1.19 deaths expected. This excess mortality occurred primarily in female employees at one of the facilities, 4 deaths observed versus 0.9 expected. Due to little data, it was difficult to estimate PCB exposures at either facility. The author suggests that occupational exposure to PCB is associated with an excess risk of mortality from cancer of the liver and biliary passages. Because the number of deaths is small, conclusions are still tentative. Continuing followup of this cohort as well as other PCB exposed cohorts should be encouraged. [Description provided by NIOSH]
