Description:The report of the Pneumoconiosis Committee of the College of American Pathologists to NIOSH on standards for the pathology of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is presented. Qualitative aspects of pulmonary pigmentation are discussed. Effects of inhaled insoluble and soluble particulates on pigmentation are examined. Soluble particulates are usually removed rapidly by the airways, and lymphatic and blood vessels. Principles for determining dust concentrations are presented. Nodular lesions in CWP are considered. Emphysema and bronchitis are discussed. Pulmonary vascular and cardiac abnormalities in CWP are detailed. Effects of aging and cigarette smoking are described. Chest radiography in CWP is considered. The radiograph is the simplest and relatively accurate method of assessing the extent of lung involvement in CWP and silicosis. Inhalation of coal dust can result in CWP, silicosis, or industrial bronchitis if the silica content is high enough. Physiological changes induced by these conditions are described.
