Description:This manual, compiled from information developed under contracts Nos. H0122053 and H0232059, familiarizes mining equipment owners and mine safety personnel with fire hazards and their prevention on large mobile machinery. As mine haulage vehicles become larger, the danger to a driver during a fire emergency is increased by the greater height of the cab above ground. This manual presents selection criteria to guide in tailoring an automatic fire sensing and suppression system for large, mobile, open pit mining equipment and mining situations. The systems described have been designed with this "flexibility of use" in mind. Cost and maintenance factors were taken into account during the design phases of the automatic truck fire protection work. It is estimated that the installed cost of the systems described in this manual will be from $3,000 to $5,000 for production run systems. Maintenance requirements are minimal.
