Description:For overall economic viability, the United States must have a dependable source of competitively priced minerals. To ensure this supply, the Bureau of Mines has been conducting research to investigate, test, and evaluate a variety of new mining system approaches. A systems approach is important in devising, evaluating, and testing for proof-of-concept, new and innovative methodologies to advance the technology base in both surface and underground mines. This paper summarizes the status of selected projects at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center that are directed toward new extraction and transport system techniques in the surface or underground mining of coal, sand and gravel, and metal and nonmetal ores.
