Description:The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored current longwall automation developments with emphasis on the underground conditions that may constrain their use. The findings from this study are based on meetings with many of the major longwall manufacturers and contractors and field visits to numerous longwall faces with some degree of automated longwall equipment. Various ground control conditions were identified, and possible effects in restricting longwall automation were denoted. Keeping these ground control conditions and constraints in mind during the preliminary designing stages will promote the continued development and success of an automated longwall system.
