The surveillance information in this report is based on the following sources: case reports from the 65 Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) project areas, data on the prevalence of reactive serologic tests for syphilis provided by the Corrections STD Prevalence Monitoring Project and state and local health departments, which voluntarily submitted correctional facility screening data to CDC. The STD surveillance systems operated by STD control programs of state and local health departments provide the data on syphilis and are the sources of most of the information in this publication. These systems are an integral part of program management at all levels of STD prevention and control in the United States. This report consists of two parts: a National Profile, which contains figures that provide an overview of syphilis morbidity in the United States and the State Profiles, which contains figures of syphilis case report trends at the state and county level." -- p. 3.
