Description:This paper discusses the results of a joint U.S. Bureau of Mines- Mine Safety and Health Administration project to advance self- contained self-rescuer (scsr) technology. It has been shown to be technically possible to produce an scsr that is approximately twice the size and weight of a filter self-rescuer and that has a rated duration of 60 min. Such an oxygen breathing apparatus can be worn on a miner's body, making it immediately available in the event of a mine emergency. The research program leading to the successful development of the new person-wearable scsr technology, as well as the preliminary results of underground field trials of person- wearable scsr's, are presented in this paper.
