    The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have shown that application of direct current between buried electrodes can effectively and economically dewater a variety of tailings materials that are not responsive to other treatment methods. Thus, tailings pond stability and capacity can in many cases be substantially enhanced by consolidating the finely divided solids into a firm, moist composite. This paper summarizes laboratory and field test results on metal mine slimes and coal waste sludges, and includes an engineering plan and cost estimate for consolidating coal wastes in a 110-acre pond to one-half their present volume. Desired physical properties of responsive tailings are delineated. [Description provided by NIOSH]
