Description:This paper seeks to place the characteristics of internal combustion engines in proper perspective with regard to clean-air requirements. The basic engine and fuel factors that influence pollutants are discussed in the context of achieving low emissions; the penalty to performance, if any, is also discussed. Advantages and disadvantages in the use of lead-free gasoline, natural gas, and propane are reviewed. Finally, the more prominent characteristics of the several types of internal combustion engines are summarized with respect to the potential each holds for development to meet clean-air requirements.
