Description:The Bureau of Mines citrate process for removing so2 from industrial waste gases comprises absorption of so2 in a solution of sodium citrate, citric acid, and sodium thiosulfate followed by reacting the absorbed so2 with h2s to precipitate elemental sulfur and regenerate the citrate solution for recycling. Two pilot plants operated to assess the feasibility of the citrate process for so2 emission control have produced tail gas containing less than 50 ppm so2 from stack gas containing 1,000 to 5,000 ppm so2.
