Description:Fine-sized mineral wastes from flotation milling and chemical plants are potential or active contributors to air and water pollution. Researchers at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center, Bureau of Mines, are developing practical methods for stabilizing such wastes. Chemical, vegetative, and combination stabilizing methods have been studied and evaluated by laboratory testing on diverse kinds of fine-sized mineral wastes, and field tests have been made using the more promising techniques. Chemical treatment methods were applied to 34 acres of uranium leach plant residues in an arid area and to a 19-acre area of vanadium leach plant residue. A combination chemical-vegetative method was used to stabilize 10 acres of copper flotation mill tailings in Nevada, and similar procedures were recently applied on mill wastes in Colorado, Idaho, Michigan, and Missouri.
