Description:Mineral nodules that occur on the oceans' floors represent a substantial potential resource of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Process development studies to devise methods for unlocking the complex assemblies of elements in the nodules were done at the Bureau of Mines Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center using two distinct types of marine nodules. A calcareous type of nodule occurring at a depth of nearly 1 kilometer off the southeast coast of the United States contained, in percent, 17 mn, 0.6 Ni, 0.3 Co, and 0.1 Cu. A siliceous type of nodule obtained from 3 to 4 kilometers off the southwest coast of the United States contained, in percent, 25 mn, 1 ni, 0.5 Cu, and 0.1 carbon monoxide.
