Description:The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines strives to minimize requirements for mineral recovery from primary and secondary domestic resources. In the latter category are galvanizing wastes that contain 65 pct zinc and are generated at the rate of over 80,000 tons annually. Laboratory procedures developed by the Bureau are described for converting these wastes to zinc oxides containing less than 0.25 pct lead by oxidizing roasts at 850 deg to 1,100 deg c in the presence of chloridizing agents. The zinc oxide product is suitable for metallurgical and chemical uses. [Description provided by NIOSH]
