  Recent research on safety in the coal mining industry suggests that certain management practices play a key role in achieving good safety performance. This U.S. Bureau of Mines article has outlined some strategies for improving safety performance that managers may not typically take into consideration. Managers should not assume that only those who are part of the company's "professional safety staff" have the ability to reduce the chances that employees will be injured. Indeed, managers may have much more potential influence over their company's safety performance than they realize. Although safety researchers have made some significant inroads toward better understanding what management can do to keep employees safe, there is still quite a lot more to learn.
