Description:Four fatalities associated with the unloading of railroad hopper cars have occurred in the western Pennsylvania basic steel industry during the past 16 years. These events were the result of uneven unloading of cars causing the body of the car to roll over and crush the victim. Until recently, similar accidents were not known in the coal industry. This suggests that the density of the material in the car has a large effect on the probability of this type of accident. A brief analysis of the conditions necessary for a hopper car rollover highlights the concern that the trend toward lighter car bodies, such as those constructed of aluminum, will increase the chance of this type of accident. The purpose of this paper is to raise the awareness of the industry to this type of hazard and to propose some recommendations to reduce railroad-car-related accidents.
