Description:The proposed International Ergonomics Association (IEA) guidelines for assessing musculoskeletal risks associated with manual materials handling activities were summarized and discussed. The guidelines which were developed by the IEA Technical Group on Musculoskeletal Disorders were similar to the NIOSH lifting equation (NLE), but differ in several respects. The differences consist of incorporating a variable load constant in the recommended weight limit component of the NLE, an additional multiplier for one handed lifting, and an additional multiplier for two person lifting. The guidelines also provide a technique for assessing jobs with sequential lifting exposures, such as when workers rotate between various tasks within a single shift. These modifications could have a major impact on how the lifting index, the risk prediction component, of the NLE is interpreted. Because of this, it was considered critical that an empirical basis or rationale be provided for selecting the multipliers to be used in the NLE and the procedures used to determine the multipliers. Detailed techniques for determining the modifications to the NLE as specified by the IEA guidelines were described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
