Description:Methods for bioaerosol monitoring of fungi and bacteria were reviewed. General principles of bioaerosol collection, three commonly used techniques for the separation and collection of bioaerosols, impaction, filtration, and impingement, and characteristics of several bioaerosol samplers were described. The use of personal protective equipment during industrial hygiene surveys and aseptic handling techniques were discussed as were the effects of environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and airflow rates on bioaerosol sampling. Other topics discussed included optimal culture media for aerosolized fungi, bacteria, thermophilic Actinomycetes, and other microorganisms, preparation, identification, and enumeration procedures for culturable bioaerosols, and identification and enumeration procedures for nonviable or viable bioaerosols. A list of manufacturers of bioaerosol monitoring equipment and supplies was included. [Description provided by NIOSH]
