Levels of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in the serum of U.S. chemical workers exposed to dioxin contaminated products: interim results.

  Blood samples were collected as part of a comprehensive medical examination of 541 individuals, 281 of whom worked at two United States chemical manufacturing facilities where chemicals contaminated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (1746016) (TCDD) were manufactured between 1951 and 1972. This preliminary report offered the results of the analyses of 46 serum samples for TCDD from 27 of these workers and from 19 referents in the New Jersey cohort. The mean level found in the production workers was 208.2 parts per trillion (ppt), which differs significantly from the mean of 8.2ppt from the 19 referents. The highest level reported was 717ppt. The level of TCDD estimated to be present in the serum of workers at the date of termination of employment at the facility showed a mean of the half life extrapolated levels to be 2,312.7ppt, with a range from 6.4 to 14,673ppt. The mean number of years exposed was 4.2. The longest exposure was 15.5 years. Age, race, and number of years since last exposure did not contribute significantly to the model. The authors conclude that the production workers in this study who were formerly engaged in the manufacture of products contaminated with TCDD had statistically significantly higher serum levels of TCDD.
