Fuzzy fault tree analysis for construction safety.

  • Description:
The use of fuzzy fault tree analysis for the investigation of construction accidents was reported. The development of this application along with new logic gates was described. Five fuzzy logic gates, AND, OR, IMPLICATION, FUZZY MEAN and FUZZY SUM, were established and presented. The potential occurrence of an event was determined using an interactive fuzzy fault tree analysis computer program. This required input from a fault tree analyst, such as the number and types of gates and basic events, which generated the fault tree logic relationship. The other input required was the assessment of safety engineers regarding the construction operations in terms of basic causes and events. The use of such a fuzzy fault tree analysis was illustrated using a previously reported case study involving the fall of a crane during construction operations. A FUZZY SUM gate as well as IMPLICATION gates were used in the analysis of this accident. The interactive computer program FFTA was developed; with input from the fault tree analysis and the user, the potential occurrence of the top event in a fault tree could be established.
