Synthesis of NTSB aircraft accident data involving helicopter external load operations in the United States and Alaska, 1980-1994.

  National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data from 1980 through 1994, compiled from a database of Accident Briefs were reviewed for accidents involving helicopter external load operations. The purpose was to examine common factors for all known heli logging accidents and crashes investigated by the NTSB during this time period. There were 220 helicopter external load operations accidents known, of which 214 were considered crashes, defined as a subset of accidents that involve impact of the helicopter body or its parts, resulting in serious injury or fatality to humans, and/or damage or destruction of the aircraft. Of these, 64 occurred during logging operations. There were 24 fatalities. There were 15 heli logging accidents in Alaska, with 11 fatalities and 11 serious nonfatal injuries. The author suggests that all helicopter logging pilots and ground crews should receive specific training in long line operation. Each company should follow all manufacturer's recommendations for more frequent helicopter maintenance, because of intensity of use and for limits on maximum allowable loads. Each company should establish and observe appropriate limits on helicopter crew flight time and duty periods. [Description provided by NIOSH]
