Description:This report contained the papers presented at a workshop focusing on the theoretical and methodological aspects of exposure assessment in retrospective epidemiologic studies, to explore the current practice of exposure assessment, and discussing opportunities for improving these assessments in the future. Specific topics addressed included characteristics of disease and some exposure considerations, characteristics of worker populations, retrospective exposure assessment, selecting measures of exposures for epidemiologic studies, use of exposure measurements, evaluation of concomitant biological and air monitoring results, evaluating other resources of exposure information, developing a classification strategy for industry based studies, strategies for reconstructing exposures, questionnaires for use in epidemiological retrospective studies, measurement of exposure assessment for community based studies, statistical evaluation of exposure assessment strategies, loss of statistical power associated with the use of a job exposure matrix in occupational case/control studies, validation of work histories for the purpose of epidemiological studies, assessing effects of nondifferential classification of exposure in occupational studies, false positive exposure errors and low exposure prevalence in community based case/control studies, and propositions for a European concerted action of research.
