  The sizing and fit practices used within the protective clothing and equipment industry were investigated. The study examined respiratory protection, physical protection, thermal protection, electrical protection, and chemical protection. A review was conducted of standards and the literature on sizing and fit. An industry survey was conducted to obtain information on industry sizing practices. Attention was also given to the sizing of protective equipment so that women, minorities, and the disabled might be better served. Few manufacturers across the industry have addressed these issues of sizing in their equipment. The largest problem found facing the end users was the inconsistency of manufacturers in specifying sizing information. One manufacturer's medium may not match the medium size of a second manufacturer at all. Recommendations for NIOSH included promoting effective uniform sizing practices by working with standards organizations to develop requirements specifying manufacturing, reporting of sizing information to end users, and establishing guidelines for determining fit for a larger number of protective clothing and equipment items.
