Use of Narrative Text Fields in Occupational Injury Data.

  The importance and application of narrative text field data obtained from the National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities System (NTOF) were described. These fields have often contained information not readily available on databases which consist only of coded data. The value of narrative injury data was illustrated by describing the development of national policies regarding confined space entry. Due to the widespread occurrence of fatalities resulting from confined space entries across industries and occupational groups, as well as due to many different actual causes of deaths, narrative information has been critical in confirming deaths due to confined space entry. Such information was then used to support the recently enacted OSHA confined space safe entry procedures. Other examples of the use of narrative text field entries to develop national policy were described including documentation and quantification of deaths due to tractors on a national level, identification of tree trimmers fatalities in order to shape regulatory policy for this occupation, the identification of several cases of methane (74828) gas asphyxia in manure pits which were used in an Alert for other farm workers, and the recognition of the risk to logging workers of being struck by falling trees. Recent efforts to numerically code narrative data were described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
