Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Other Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs) in the Jewelry Manufacturing Industry.

  The incidence, prevention, and treatment of cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs), particularly carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), were reviewed. Characteristics and the medical diagnosis of CTS were described. A review of the literature indicated that CTDs have been the primary cause of occupational illness in the United States and the incidence of such conditions has been increasing since 1981. Possible reasons for this increase were discussed. Although the red meatpacking industry has consistently had the highest rate of CTDs based on Bureau of Labor statistics, dental hygienists and data entry keyboard operators have been reported to be the occupations at the highest risk for wrist injury. Many jobs associated with the jewelry industry have also been reported to have hazards associated with CTDs. The use of engineering controls, administrative controls, and medical management for the prevention of CTDs was discussed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
