Description:This report discusses the generation of samples for testing under the Proficiency Analytical Testing program. Specific topics included the generation of standard reference filter samples for lead (7439921), cadmium (7440439), zinc (7440666), and silica (14808607). The main components of the dust generation facility included the dust feeder (which delivered a continuous stream of aerosol), sonic velocity disperser (which dispersed, deagglomerated, and diluted the aerosol), settling tower (where larger particles were removed), and four identical sample collection chambers. Prior to sample collection, the aerosol stream leaves the settling chamber through the exhaust line. During collection the stream was uniformly distributed to four sample collection chambers. The basic elements of the dust feeder were described. Sample collection filters were placed in the collection chambers, which were then tightly closed. The feed dust was added to the hopper of the dust feeder, and the rate was adjusted by controlling the disk rotation speed. The required sampling time was determined by calibrating the output of the feeder as a function of disk rotation speed for each dust used. [Description provided by NIOSH]
