  The development, design, and implementation of occupational hazard controls were reviewed. Considerations in determining occupational hazard control needs such as proper hazard recognition and evaluation methods and sentinel markers for the identification of sites at high risk for possible catastrophic occurrences were described. Principles of control including control at the source of the hazard, using substitution of less hazardous materials, equipment, or process, process isolation, local exhaust ventilation, and/or work practice modification; control in workplace using general ventilation or housekeeping procedures; control by the worker using isolation, alteration of work practices, administrative controls; and/or the use of personal protective equipment were discussed. The determination of an optimal system of controls based on these principles was described. [Description provided by NIOSH]
