  Advances in industrial hygiene measurement and control techniques were reviewed. The first step in the assessment of worker exposure involves the identification of the routes of exposure. Toxic materials can enter the body via ingestion, skin absorption, or inhalation. Air sampling programs have to be designed to answer specific questions such as statistical predictions, or worker protection. A preliminary survey is often the first step, and reveals process points at which there is potential for dermal or inhalation exposure. A walk through survey of the premises permits observation of all facility operations, and possible sources and potential contaminants can be identified. The report of this survey forms the basis for decisions on monitoring and sampling. Criteria for worker exposure measurements are frequently selected by reference to established standards such as OSHA or NIOSH recommended exposure levels (RELs) or threshold limit values (TLVs). Standards for exposure to radioactive contaminants have to be in accord with the most recent federal guidelines. Exposure monitoring aspects discussed included initial monitoring, monitoring for exposure distribution, and individual worker exposure. Air sampling methods and instruments discussed included personal samplers, sampling train, particle size separation, aerosol particles, sampling for gases and vapors, and viable aerosols. Exposure control techniques dealt with included engineering controls, administrative controls, worker practices, personal protective equipment, and employee education. The author concludes that professional judgment and scientific method are essential for the proper design of an industrial hygiene sampling program. [Description provided by NIOSH]
